Directly across the street from the limestone majesty of the Estrela Basilica lies the Jardim da Estrela (officially the Guerra Junqueiro Garden), a materialised paradise of tranquillity. Opened to the public in 1852, this romantic, English-style park was envisioned as a lush sanctuary for Lisbon’s upper classes. It is truly fascinating to step inside its wrought-iron gates and experience an immediate drop in the city’s frantic pulse, surrounded by towering trees and exotic plants from all over the world.

The heart of the park is defined by its quiet duck ponds, winding pathways, and various benches inviting us for a good conversation. Parents chat while children explore a big modern playground, and locals sip espresso at the open-air cafés. Taking a stroll through the park is also a perfect escape on a hot summer’s day. It’s also close to Casa Fernando Pessoa. It makes one wonder if the famous poet also spent some of his days sitting under the shade in the park of the star.
