The station was designed by architect Sanchez Jorge, who created a large open hall with details inspired by the sea. Metal structures suggest sails and the front of ships, while railings are shaped like waves. The design creates movement even when passengers are simply walking through the station.
The artistic project brought together 11 artists from five continents. Their work includes colourful azulejo panels, paintings and sculptures. Portuguese artist Joaquim Rodrigo created Praia do Vau, which was transferred to tiles by Querubim Lapa. Other artists include Hundertwasser, Erró, Yayoi Kusama, Sean Scully and Magdalena Abakanowicz.
