Five Przewalski’s horses, transferred from European zoos, were released into the Altyn Dala region. Conservationists said the species disappeared from the area around 200 years ago, making the release a significant milestone for wildlife restoration efforts.

The reintroduction was carried out by the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, which won an Earthshot Prize in 2024. The programme also helped restore saiga antelope populations on the Kazakh steppe. Conservation groups said most Przewalski’s horses currently live in Mongolia and China, with the latest release aiming to return the species to part of its historic range.
