A comparison of holiday costs across some of Europe's most popular destinations found that Portugal is among the most affordable countries for hotels and restaurants. While Turkey came out as the lowest-cost destination overall, Portugal ranked particularly well when it came to accommodation and dining – two of the biggest expenses for most travellers.

The findings are based on Eurostat price level data, which compares the cost of goods and services across European countries. The analysis looked at destinations including Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Turkey and Croatia.

For many travellers, accommodation and eating out account for the biggest share of a holiday budget, and this is where Portugal performed particularly well. Hotel stays and restaurant prices remain well below the European average, allowing visitors to enjoy longer stays or spend more on experiences rather than accommodation.

Spain also ranked among the more affordable destinations, particularly for food, while Italy was found to be the most expensive of the Mediterranean countries included in the comparison. Turkey remained the cheapest overall, although high taxes on alcohol mean alcoholic drinks are considerably more expensive there than in Portugal.

Of course, prices in Portugal aren't the same everywhere. Travellers heading to Lisbon, parts of the Algarve, or Porto during the peak summer months might find prices a little bit higher than they would in the quieter seasons. However, destinations in the Alentejo, central Portugal or lesser-known parts of the Algarve can offer excellent value, especially outside July and August.

With the cost of travel continuing to rise across Europe, the latest figures are another reminder of why Portugal remains such a popular choice. Whether it's a city break, a beach holiday or a road trip through the countryside, visitors can still find good food, comfortable accommodation and memorable experiences without spending as much as they might elsewhere.
