Sunlight, healthy food, quality sleep, and opportunities for sports were the criteria used to name Lisbon, among 47 cities, the happiest place to visit.
To support the assessment, clinical psychologist Natalie Dattilo-Ryan shared her opinion, which helped make Lisbon the happiest city in the world.
Factors of happiness
The study says that about 10% of restaurants in Lisbon serve healthy food, the second-highest proportion among the cities evaluated. In addition to healthy food, Lisbon offers a diversity of dishes, as well as more affordable prices for tourists. In Lisbon, tourists can enjoy fresh seafood and snacks in traditional taverns.
Lisbon is also known for being easy to walk, even with its uneven terrain. The city includes several tourist attractions in close proximity, making them easy to explore on foot, with various panoramic viewpoints for those who want to calm their heart rate.
Healthy food and ease of walking were already strong points, but Lisbon also stands out for the availability of green spaces which, according to the study, offer 49 square meters of green space per inhabitant, almost four times more than Madrid. In addition to green spaces, Lisbon is close to beaches, for example, which connects the city even more with nature.
European cities are the happiest
Lisbon is the happiest city in the world for tourists, followed by Helsinki, Finland, which was elected the happiest country in the world, making its capital's presence in the ranking natural.
Completing the top 3 is Orlando, in part due to the availability of amusement parks such as Disney World and Universal Studios.
Orlando is the only non-European city in the top 10, which ends with Athens in fourth place, followed by Edinburgh, Madrid, Vienna, Budapest, Oslo, and Vilnius.
