The artefacts, dating from the ninth millennium BC to the 15th century AD, were unveiled at Damascus’ National Museum during French President Emmanuel Macron’s landmark visit to the Syrian capital, marking a symbolic step in restoring Syria’s cultural heritage.

The collection includes Roman, Byzantine and Islamic-era artefacts, including objects from Damascus’ Umayyad Mosque. The items remained in France after diplomatic relations deteriorated during the conflict. Syrian authorities said the return represents the beginning of wider efforts to recover antiquities held abroad and preserve the country’s archaeological legacy for future generations.
