Travellers reported being directed through temporary holding barriers, with lines extending all the way back into the security checkpoint area as staff worked to manage the volume of passengers.

The delays come during one of the Algarve’s busiest periods of the summer, when weekend travel is at its peak. The phased introduction of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which will introduce biometric checks for many non-EU travellers, has also increased processing times at some border control points.

Passengers travelling through Faro Airport are being advised to allow extra time for departures, particularly during busy weekend periods, as high passenger numbers continue to place pressure on airport facilities.
