The results highlight the country’s economic disparities, even though the national median income rose by 7.6 per cent compared with the previous figure. As might be expected, the highest figures are found in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

The data were released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), which concluded that the median annual net income in Portugal stood at €12,316 per taxpayer in 2024. In other words, the figures show that the majority of Portuguese people, assuming they receive 14 monthly salaries per year, will have earned €870.7 per month. In 2023, statistics showed that Portuguese people, on a median basis, earned €11,466 per year.

In Oeiras, workers receive the highest median annual income, at €17,250 per year, or €1,232 per month. Lisbon comes second with €15,188 per year, and Alcochete (€14,889) third. Fourth place is held by Cascais (€14,524), followed by Coimbra and Vila Franca de Xira, at €14,388 and €14,004 respectively. Thus, these six municipalities are the only ones in the country where the median income exceeds €1,000 per month.

There are 74 municipalities above the national average (€12,316); however, the INE does not publish data for municipalities with fewer than 2,000 taxpayers, meaning nine municipalities are excluded from the analysis. Even so, it is clear that the highest figures are concentrated, above all, in Greater Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula and, albeit to a lesser extent, in Coimbra.

On the other hand, there are municipalities with figures below the national average, such as Resende, which has a median annual net income of €8,972 and is thus the only municipality below nine thousand euros. Following this are Cinfães and Valpaços, at €9,131 and €9,136 respectively.
