We left the Algarve early in the morning, where the day started cooler than the hot August weather we are used to.

During the journey north, conditions kept changing. At some points we drove through very heavy rain, followed by lighter rain, before sudden blue skies and sunshine. Then, not long afterwards, the clouds returned again.

The changing conditions match today's forecast from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). Several districts across northern and central Portugal are under yellow warnings for heavy showers and thunderstorms.

IPMA says some thunderstorms could bring between 10 and 20 millimetres of rain in one hour, as well as wind gusts of up to 70 km/h.

Our drive from south to north certainly gave us a good example of Portugal's very mixed weather today.
