Net inward migration accounted for 72 percent of population growth, while births exceeding deaths contributed 28 percent. Dublin’s population reached nearly 1.6 million, representing 28.9 percent of the national total, the highest share in Ireland, and continued to drive growth.

Ireland’s population is getting older while the number of children continues to decline. People aged 14 and under fell below one million for the first time since 2014, accounting for 18 percent of the population. Meanwhile, 891,100 people were aged 65 or older, up 165,000 since 2020. Immigration also declined, with 110,600 people entering the country during the 12 months to April, while 62,500 emigrated during that period.
