Storms, heavy rain and hail forecast as weather warnings issued

Storms, heavy rain, hail and strong winds are forecast for parts of Portugal today, with seven mainland districts under a yellow weather warning.

The warning covers Faro, Beja, Évora, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Guarda and Bragança and will remain in place between 12pm and 9pm today, 28 September.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is warning of conditions that could lead to thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall, with between 10 and 20 millimetres of rain potentially falling within just one hour.

Hail is also possible, while wind gusts could reach between 70 and 90 kilometres per hour.

The Algarve is among the areas included in the warning, with showers expected particularly from the afternoon. These could become heavy at times and may be accompanied by thunderstorms and occasional hail, especially inland.

Temperatures, however, will remain relatively mild. Faro is expected to reach a maximum of around 24°C, while temperatures in Portimão could climb to around 25°C.

At sea, waves of between 1.5 and two metres are expected along the west coast of the Algarve, while on the south coast waves should remain below one metre.

The unsettled weather comes as Portugal begins to feel the indirect effects of a rapidly developing depression in the North Atlantic, west of Ireland.

IPMA said the approach of a trough associated with the depression could already bring showers and thunderstorms today, with these more likely in inland areas during the afternoon.

The change in weather is expected to continue into the middle of the week.

Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, a cold front associated with the same depression is forecast to cross mainland Portugal. This is expected to bring periods of rain, which could become temporarily heavier across northern and central regions.

The Azores are also facing unsettled conditions, with all three island groups currently under yellow warnings due to forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

A yellow warning is issued by IPMA when weather conditions may pose a risk for certain activities, meaning people in the affected areas should pay attention to updated forecasts and warnings.
