SDR Portugal, which manages the system, announced the milestone on 28 September, as reported by Executive Digest.
An online counter at volta.com.pt now lets the public follow the totals. It updates daily with returns recorded up to the previous day; the numbers moving between updates are estimates based on the previous week’s average.
More return points planned
The network has around 3,000 collection points, but SDR Portugal acknowledges that some consumers still struggle to return their packaging.
Another 32 kiosks are planned. These accept containers in batches, handling around 120 per minute, with an operator available to help. Eight are already operating, including in Albufeira and Portimão.
SDR Portugal is asking councils to speed up approvals for further installations. Airports, schools and other busy locations can also join a voluntary network of return points.
The organisation aims to collect 90% of eligible containers by the end of 2029.
