These batteries had been previously measured to have 5 to 15 percent lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries, but new materials can improve this substantially. Demand is already rising, with Chinese manufacturer CATL reporting a surge in orders for their sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries are suggested to be a cheaper, more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries. While lithium must be mined from the ground, sodium is incredibly abundant: we season our dinner with it every night.
