The drug seizure resulted from coastal patrol and surveillance operations carried out by personnel from the Setúbal Local Command of the Maritime Police, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) stated in a press release.
According to the AMN, “several bales were located on a beach” in the Carvalhal area, prompting a “search and reconnaissance operation along the coastline” to find “other packages or items” relevant to the investigation.
Search area
The search area was progressively expanded, resulting in the seizure of 12 bales weighing approximately 580 kilograms, in an operation supported by personnel from the Sines Local Command of the Maritime Police.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, a source from the Setúbal Maritime Police said the operation took place “over the last 48 hours” and that tests on the seized product confirmed it was “hashish.”
In its statement, the AMN added that search operations are continuing along the coast, with Maritime Police units remaining on the ground to detect any material that may have washed ashore or be scattered across the area.
The matter has been reported to the competent judicial authority, and the investigation is proceeding to determine the origin of the hashish bales, the circumstances involved, and the identities of any individuals potentially involved.
