One of the Government's plans for 2027 involves digitising traffic offence reports, as well as bringing back the GNR Traffic Brigade and revising the Highway Code.

Digital fines

Luís Neves, Minister of Internal Administration, said that from January, the country is preparing to digitise traffic fines, during a parliamentary hearing on the State Budget.

Return of the traffic brigade

The Minister also said that the Traffic Brigade would resume operations in the first months of 2027. He added that the necessary legislation is being prepared before being presented to the Council of Ministers and Parliament.

Revision of the Highway Code

The revision of the Highway Code will have a greater impact on behaviours associated with road accidents, including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

The Ministry of Internal Administration also revealed that limitation periods for fines will be extended, while penalties will be increased for drivers who repeatedly engage in dangerous behaviour.

The specific changes and implementation dates will depend on the legislation approved and published.
