Last month, the region saw “strong growth” in tourism activity, which was reflected in the data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and which recorded the reception of 492 thousand guests in the region's accommodation establishments, a figure that represents an “increase of 10.1% compared to the same month last year”, Turismo do Algarve said in a statement.
This increase was “driven by the Easter holidays”, which this year were celebrated in April, and was felt mainly in the volume of “non-resident guests, with a growth of 10.6%”, a figure that exceeded the 8.6% growth by residents, it stated.
“With regard to overnight stays, the region recorded a total of 1.86 million in April, representing an increase of 11.3% in annual terms”, quantified Turismo do Algarve, estimating the growth of residents at 11.6% and that of non-resident tourists at 11.2%.
Regional Tourism highlighted that, “in the accumulated total since the beginning of the year, the Algarve has shown growth of 0.9% in this indicator”.
The results were also positive, “with total revenue reaching around 129 million euros”, and suffered a “significant increase of 16.1% compared to the same month in 2024”.
“From January to April, revenue growth was 4.7%”, added Turismo do Algarve, setting the average stay in the region at 3.77 nights and highlighting that this is “one of the highest in the country”, which has a national average of 2.50 nights, it compared.
Albufeira
“Among the Algarve municipalities that stood out, Albufeira led with 678 thousand overnight stays in April, registering an overall growth of 4.8%, driven by overnight stays from non-residents (+7.6%). Other municipalities also showed notable performances, namely Portimão (+26.2%), Lagoa (+15.7%), Lagos (+15.5%) and Loulé (+8.7%)”, it pointed out.
The number of passengers passing through Gago Coutinho International Airport in Faro also showed “very positive growth”, the regional body considered, emphasizing that the total of one million passengers registered in April “corresponds to an increase of 13.6% compared to the same month in 2024”.
The accumulated growth for the first four months of the year was 8.1%, it said.
“These results not only reinforce the Algarve’s position as a tourist destination of excellence, but also demonstrate our capacity for adaptation and resilience in an extremely competitive international context”, considered the president of Turismo do Algarve, André Gomes, quoted in the statement.
The results demonstrate “the effectiveness of regional strategies for promoting and diversifying the tourism offer”, André Gomes also said, reaffirming the objective of continuing the work to establish the Algarve as “a pillar of the national economy and an example of success in the sustainable evolution of the tourism sector”.
