"We have a fare update, which is automatic and has something to do with the increase in the cost of living, with the increase in inflation, and which is deliberate, let's say, in national terms," the president of the AMP and the Porto City Council, Pedro Duarte, told journalists.

The issue at hand was a proposal, unanimously approved by the mayors present, for a "regular tariff update for public passenger transport (TAT), effective from January 1, 2026, in the AMP," which was set at 2.28% by the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT).

The specific details of how its application will affect the prices of occasional Andante tickets will be defined in December, but at the CmP meeting, the first secretary of the AMP executive committee, Ariana Pinho, pointed out that, if the TAT is directly applied, a Z2 ticket could increase from €1.40 to €1.43 and "round up to €1.45."

Last year, there were no increases in occasional tickets or onboard passes, with passes also maintaining their price.

Monthly passes

Regarding monthly passes, Pedro Duarte said that it was decided to "freeze" the price, which in most cases is 40 euros (metropolitan pass) or 30 euros (municipal or three-zone pass).

"This price will remain the same for at least another year. This is done, of course, with effort on the part of the municipalities, because there is a deficit that arises, but we assume this responsibility as municipalities, so that we can continue to promote the use of public transport in this metropolitan region as well," defended the metropolitan president.

The mayor of Porto stressed that there is a policy that "is social, associated with public transport, to support those who are most vulnerable and those with fewer economic resources," but there also has to be "sustainability" in "promoting forms of mobility that are compatible with the current reality of most large urban centers."

"We have to look at public transport today as a public good that ultimately benefits everyone who uses it, but ends up benefiting the whole of society not only from the point of view of environmental externalities, but naturally also the well-being and quality of life of all people," he said, when questioned about the financial sustainability of transport services.
