Developed in Portimão and Vilamoura, the project uses the maritime context as a therapeutic tool for people with mental illness and autism spectrum disorders, relying on strategic partnerships that include local municipalities, marinas, and health units.
Throughout this first cycle, 95 participants took part in activities aimed at developing autonomy, self-esteem, and community integration, transforming the sea into a safe space for learning and personal growth.
The intervention has stood out for its ability to manage anxiety, using individualised adaptation processes for participants who initially feared the nautical environment. Specialised support allowed for a gradual transition from arrival at the pontoon to actual navigation, promoting states of tranquillity, focus, and emotional regulation.
In addition to the direct impact on beneficiaries, who report a significant improvement in their social life and self-confidence, the project has promoted the strengthening of family ties and the demystification of mental illness through activities shared with caregivers and family members.
The success of the intervention model was recently recognised nationally, having been presented as an example of best practices at the 2nd Ocean Literacy Congress in Lisbon. The assessment of this first year reinforces the effectiveness of "Navigating the Mind" in combating social isolation and improving the quality of life of its participants.
With continued support from European funds, the initiative reaffirms its potential for long-term social impact, positioning the Algarve at the forefront of innovative responses that combine mental health with ocean literacy.
