Researchers analysed changes in air quality alongside increases in zero-emission vehicle registrations, and the findings provide real-world evidence that electric vehicle adoption improves air quality. Researchers plan further analysis to examine the impacts on health outcomes.

The study focused on neighbourhood-level data rather than national averages. Every 200 additional zero-emission vehicles was associated with a 1.1 percent drop in nitrogen dioxide levels. Nitrogen dioxide is a harmful pollutant linked to health risks from fossil fuel emissions. The findings suggest local adoption of electric vehicles can produce measurable environmental benefits.
