As part of his fundraising mission, he has organised a concert: “One stage, 16 artists, one cause”, which is a charity effort spearheaded by a group of local musicians. It’s scheduled for 29 March at the Auditório Carlos do Carmo in Lagoa, starting at 4pm and lasting three and a half hours.
The concert, presented by the illustrious José Salvador, features artists who dabble in all kinds of genres. The full set list comprises singers, musicians, bands, and even a DJ: Ana Parrinha, Jorge Franco, João Arrobe, Ondina, Ricardo Neto, Beto Calúlu, Grupo de Cantores Fonte Nova de Estômbar, Jan Taken, Ally Garrido, Joaquim Andres, Luana Velásquez, Ricardo Sousa, Paulo Cabrita, Tereza Agostino, Paulo Cardeta, and DJ Cabrita.
Tickets for this event are free, but a donation of any amount would be appreciated, as Luís is relying on the kindness of guests to fund the minivan purchase, which would drastically improve his quality of life. “Right now, I go to work every day in my wheelchair, on the roadside, even when it’s raining, windy, or in the heat of the summer”, he told The Portugal News. “If I had this van, I could get to work in a dignified way to support my family. It’s at least a lot safer.”
As such, Luís is seeking donations from both individuals and companies to secure the ability to drive. The minivan, specially designed by Ford to cater to his disability, will be on display at the event. “They’re bringing the van here to show that it really does exist. They’ll drop it off on Friday and come pick it up again on Monday”, he shared. “For those who might want to help, for those who’ve already helped, it’s proof that this van is real. Your money isn’t being used for any other purpose.”
The original price of the minivan is in the €50,000 range, but most of that has now been covered. This mission to raise the funds has been ongoing for the better part of a year, and this is the final push to meet his goal. He has, fortunately, had the institutional support of the Lagoa council through this whole process, but the municipal government isn’t legally allowed to provide financial aid to individuals. They’ve covered the cost of organising the concert itself, including the fees associated with the venue and artists, but it’s up to the generosity of the public to get Luís over the line with his minivan fund. “If people don’t come for me, they should at least come for the artists”, he encouraged.
As for what he’ll do once he gets the minivan, “carry on working, I’ve got a young daughter to take care of”, he concluded.
