Sporting was eliminated on 15 April in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after drawing 0-0 against Arsenal in the second leg in London, missing out on an unprecedented chance to reach the semi-finals.

After losing 1-0 in Lisbon in the first leg, with a goal from German Kai Havertz in the 90+1 minute, the 'Lions' needed to win away to advance, but could only manage a goalless draw in their visit to the Premier League leaders.
Sporting thus 'fall' for the second time in the quarter-finals of the main European club competition, repeating what happened in the 1982/83 season, while Arsenal advance to the semi-finals, where they will face Atlético de Madrid, which eliminated FC Barcelona.
