With the Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Minister of Education Fernando Alexandre present, the Head of State underlined the fact that it is teachers who bring about change in schools and that their profession must be respected and recognised if the country's education system is to be strengthened.

The President also referred to the findings of the PISA study, pointing out that Portugal has a long way to go in terms of student learning and criticising the slow rate of social mobility, on the grounds that students' socioeconomic backgrounds should not determine their future opportunities.

At the ceremony, which involved the unveiling of a plaque and a blessing by the Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Rui Valério, António José Seguro emphasised the effect of the Recovery and Resilience Plan in renovating school infrastructure and called for more encouragement of reading and critical thinking.
