At the opening session of Expo Atlantic Terroir 2026, held over the weekend at the Terceira Island Multisectoral Park, the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, gave remarks. He stated that the wine sector in the Azores is experiencing strong dynamism and regenerative entrepreneurship.

The Minister of Agriculture, quoted in a press release from the executive branch, made a statement. He said Azorean viticulture now plays a decisive role in the economic and social regeneration of the islands. This is supported by historical results and an increasingly entrepreneurial ecosystem.

António Ventura stated, “The year 2025 marked a record for the last two decades. Grape production in the region reached 1,048 tons.” Pico Island led with 92% of regional production (956 tons). Terceira Island followed with 36 tons.

According to the official, the sector's strength is also reflected in the number of economic agents. It is also reflected in market references.

In 2025, the Azores Wine and Vine Institute registered a record 35 producers. This number remains solid in 2026 and may reach a new maximum by year’s end.

As of 1 April 2026, the market has 115 brands and 179 commercial references. These numbers far exceed the previous year’s historical maximum.

The regional secretary also announced the availability of 3,700 vine plants. These include the Verdelho, Terrantês do Pico, and Arinto dos Açores varieties. The plants come from a project with the Azores Biotechnology Centre and are ready for immediate distribution to winegrowers.

António Ventura revealed a new research project. It focuses on certifying rootstocks of traditional grape varieties. This measure aims to reinforce the government’s commitment to sustainability and protecting the archipelago’s unique viticultural heritage.

He stated, “The vitality of these figures and the ongoing investment in science and innovation confirm that Azorean viticulture is on the right track. The future will be increasingly competitive."

From the government official's perspective, this investment cycle shows the sector is ready for external markets. It always maintains the quality and authenticity that define Azorean wines.
