Rossio is one of the most central metro stations in Lisbon. This busy spot sits under Praça dos Restauradores, in Praça do Rossio, and at the heart of Baixa. It stands out with its tile art on the walls.

It was opened in 1998, and Maria Keil was responsible for the design of the tiles that you can see today on the walls of the station, as she did for São Sebastião and other stops. Big square panels cover the platforms with geometric lines and wavy shapes.

Helena Almeida is the artist behind the piece, where you can see a girl moving through the tiles, as if moving with all the metro passengers, without a specific destination.

This station shows how art has a role to play in the daily life of the people who inhabit a city. Have you noticed the tiles in Rossio? Have you stopped to look at the panel with the walking lady? What’s your favorite metro art in Lisbon?
