According to the meteorologist from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), cloudiness is still expected in the North and Central regions today and Tuesday, with the possibility of periods of light rain or drizzle, which may be more moderate in Minho and more likely on the coast.

According to Maria João Frada, a slight increase in maximum temperatures is expected in the North and Central regions on 19 May, with the increase accentuated on Wednesday.

“On the 20th [Wednesday], we will begin to feel the influence of an anticyclone that will be located over France and extend its influence towards the Madeira archipelago, along with an inverted trough that extends from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula, which begins to transport tropical air masses that at this time of year cause temperatures to rise significantly,” she explained.

Thus, according to Maria João Frada, on 20 May temperatures will range from 6 to 8/9 degrees Celsius, except in some coastal locations north of Cabo Raso, where they will be lower.

We will reach the 20th/21st with temperatures in most of the territory ranging between 26 and 30 degrees, with higher values ​​in the Tagus Valley and in the interior of Alentejo, where they can reach 32 and 34/35 degrees. On the western coastal strip, mainly north of Cabo Raso, they will vary between 20 and 25 degrees,” she said.

On 21 May, maximum temperatures will rise again by 2-3 degrees in some parts of the continent.
