The session was moderated by Dr Magda Cordeiro, Coordinator of the Oncology Department at HPA Saúde Group, and featured Dr Ana Rita Herculano, Coordinator of the Gastroenterology Unit at HPA Gambelas, and Nurse Catarina Bentes, Head Nurse of Special Examinations at HPA Gambelas.
Dr Ana Rita Herculano addressed the challenges in diagnosing colorectal cancer, highlighting the underestimation of symptoms in younger patients and the gaps in the diagnostic pathway that lead to detection only at advanced stages. She emphasised that a high-quality colonoscopy depends on strict quality indicators, such as proper bowel preparation and available technology, and identified high-risk groups, including individuals with Lynch syndrome. She also stressed the urgency of immediate referral when warning signs such as iron-deficiency anaemia or changes in bowel habits arise, noting that timeliness and technical rigour are key to improving disease prognosis.
Nurse Catarina Bentes highlighted the crucial role of nursing in patient preparation and education, underlining the increasing incidence of colorectal cancer among younger populations due to factors such as sedentary lifestyles and unbalanced, low-diversity diets. She discussed the main barriers to undergoing colonoscopy and identified commonly overlooked warning signs that should prompt early assessment. She concluded by reinforcing that a structured nursing intervention is essential to improve health literacy and reduce anxiety, ensuring adequate bowel preparation, avoiding repeat procedures, and maximising the effectiveness of screening.
