On 25 June, canoeist Gabriel Fernandes was crowned European marathon champion in the C1 short course, in a competition taking place until 28 June in Pitesti, Romania.

The Portuguese athlete completed the 3.4-kilometre course in 16:56.67 minutes, leaving Hungarian Unor Haris 4.59 seconds behind and Spaniard Mateo Lago 11.95 seconds behind, in second and third place respectively.
On 26 June, Gabriel Fernandes will compete in the C1 long-course event at the European Championships, where Portugal is fielding a team of 14 canoeists across 13 events.
