In Soure, in the district of Coimbra, the Minister highlighted the rise in fuel prices and noted that fuel consumption, including jet fuel, rose by about 4 to 6% over the same period last year. The Minister added that the figures are not bad, but they are still surprising.

In this context, Maria da Graça Carvalho reportedly said it is important for the Portuguese to economise on fuel use. As an example, the Minister says that in crises similar to the current one, saving fuel has always been a reality, and that some countries have even imposed austerity measures. The Minister also adds that each individual, company, and institution should think about saving energy, including fuel.

Use of public transport

On another occasion, the Minister reportedly mentioned the importance of using public transport.

Maria da Graça Carvalho believes there is heavy dependence on automobiles, which increases fuel consumption, as the Minister of the Environment has already pointed out.

On public transport, the Minister says the sector is receiving significant investment; however, she acknowledges it is a lengthy process. Maria da Graça Carvalho also says investments are being made in the Lisbon and Porto Metro systems, and affirms that the Mondego Metro in Coimbra is already proving a success.
