“We all want to be part of that community. After all, it is necessary not only in good times, but also when we need help.” Jenny Clarke, President of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, (APAA) knows from personal experience. “APAA’s motto is ‘here to help’, and indeed we have to help and serve our community in many different ways.”
Knowledge of where you are moving to, the lifestyle and culture is paramount. “Finding out the bad stuff is very important. Finding your dream home, settling in, and finding that the new supermarket is scheduled for next year in your back garden.” Extreme? But it happens. Country-lovers will know that the noise levels in that neck of the woods, so to speak, are a different variety from that which you would expect in the city or a thriving town. “Research the local area before you move; stay a couple of nights in the area.”
Spending a little time and money up-front will save sleepless nights later. “We know about the dogs and cats in communities. They are either a blessing or a dreadful war zone. Cats multiply, creating feral cat colonies. We have thousands of them, and they need monitoring, sterilising and feeding. Abandoned, abused dogs, and pregnant dogs also need help and rehoming.” Barking dogs are accepted by the local community, almost deaf to their howling and woofs. “It’s part and parcel of the country's surroundings. However, a dog barking from a town balcony all night long is a nightmare…Unacceptable.”
Talking to neighbours is better over a coffee or a glass of wine than taking the problem too personally. “We’ve had dreadful situations where there has to be some mediation. You can report it to the GNR. There are times between 7 pm and 7 am. Where there should be no unavoidable noise. 11pm is the limit for gatherings and blaring T.V.’s etc. But a chat and a mutual understanding may be a simpler way to solve the problem.” APAA tries to help their communities and asks that people, individuals try to help themselves and in turn help APAA.
