Jenny Clarke, President of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), has just received sad and shocking news from Sid Richardson, CIC of Animal Rescue Algarve (ARA) that two of their dogs have eaten some toxic berries, and one, “Dudu”, has died, and the other, “Malu”, is seriously ill. The toxic seeds are quite large and colourful. “They are also a huge danger to humans and, of course, children.”
They are a popular plant due to their green, bushy appearance all year round. The “Cyca” miniature palm, also known as the Cyca Revoluta or Japanese Sago Palm. There are many plants and flowers, unbeknownst to garden and patio lovers on the Algarve, that are highly dangerous to grazing animals, pets and humans. “Saddened by the news, of course!” Jenny and APAA are long associates of Sid, his team and ARA. “We just don’t know what is lurking in the guise of something irresistible.” A warning to everyone: check out the lists on the websites below.

Jenny and APAA are synonymous with cat colonies, feral cats, and abandoned dogs. Through their SNiP campaign, they have raised awareness for the sterilisation of animals as soon as possible. “We received a rather belated cry for help from a restaurant owner outside of Silves.” Belated? “He has discovered over 50 cats outside his property, and of course, they will multiply fast!” It will be a mammoth task to TNR these feral felines. “Luckily, trapping, neutering and returning these felines will be overseen by a small private association nearby.”
Always on the lookout for help, APAA, with its newly purchased catchpoles and drop-nets, is in need of extra hands. “The problem is, once we mention these small private shelters or animal charities, there seems to be a huge influx of abandoned animals at their gates and local people begging for help.” Their finances do not stretch to unbidden “dumping”. “That’s why APAA’s work is so important,” Jenny cannot stress enough. “We raise money through our shops, pop-ups and events for other charities and shelters to help them.” Sounds odd, but that is how it works. Donations for APAA go a long way!
