According to Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), the number of Irish citizens officially resident in Portugal increased from 5,450 in 2023 to 6,081 in 2024, representing growth of almost 12% in a single year.
These figures underline Portugal’s continued appeal to Irish residents who are considering relocation, retirement, property ownership or a second home abroad.
“Portugal continues to attract interest from Irish people at many different stages of life, including families, professionals, entrepreneurs, property buyers and those planning for retirement,” said Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce.
“The growth of the Irish community in Portugal shows that this interest is translating into real decisions to spend more time in Portugal or to establish a permanent home there. Portugal offers an attractive combination of lifestyle, international connectivity and a wide choice of locations, from established cities and coastal communities to quieter rural areas.”
The Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars will provide practical information for Irish residents considering buying property, relocating, retiring or spending part of the year in Portugal. Visitors will be able to meet property developers, property agents and specialist advisers covering areas such as taxation, financial planning, legal matters and the process of purchasing and owning Portuguese property.
During the day on 22 September, a programme of seminars and panel discussions will explore the different aspects of moving to Portugal, including the country’s regions, lifestyle and property opportunities. Attendees will also hear directly from Irish people who have already made the move and can share their experiences and practical advice.
This free event will take place from 10.30 am at the Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge Terrace, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. Advance registration is required at: https://MTP-Dublin-2026.eventbrite.co.uk
