The new rules aim to improve safety, reduce overcrowding and discourage inexperienced climbers from attempting the world’s highest peak after record numbers of ascents and growing concerns over fatalities and congestion.

The proposed regulations also include mandatory medical fitness certificates and tighter oversight of climbing expeditions. Lawmakers say the measures are intended to protect climbers, preserve Everest’s environment and strengthen Nepal’s mountaineering industry. If fully implemented, the rules would mark one of the most significant changes to Everest access in recent years.
