The project had initially been expected to be completed in July, but construction is still ongoing.

Postal reports that the project is being developed by the concessionaires of the beach facilities in the area, following an agreement with Castro Marim Council.

Castro Marim Mayor Filomena Sintra had previously announced the project, explaining that the new walkway would connect Altura and Praia Verde and improve access along this part of the coastline.

As well as making it easier to walk between the two beaches, the boardwalk will help protect the surrounding dune system by keeping people on a designated route rather than walking directly across the dunes.

The area is environmentally sensitive and forms part of the Ria Formosa/Castro Marim Natura 2000 network.

Wooden walkways have become increasingly common along the Algarve coastline, allowing access to beaches while reducing the impact of large numbers of visitors on dunes and their vegetation.

Altura and Praia Verde are both located in the municipality of Castro Marim, close to the Spanish border, and are particularly popular during the summer months.

A new date for the completion of the boardwalk has not yet been announced.
