In an Instagram post, Princess Eugenie wrote: “We are so happy to share with you Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Her name is a tribute to three people we love and admire, from both the past and the present, including her great-grandmother, whom we hold in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history; two places we love and consider home.”

Adelaide was born on Monday, 3 August, at 6.20pm in a Lisbon hospital, Buckingham Palace announced. She is the couple’s first child to be born in Portugal, where the family has divided their time between Portugal and the UK since 2022.

A statement from Buckingham Palace at the time of her birth read: "Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news," BBC reports.

Adelaide, who is not a Royal Highness, becomes 15th in line to the throne, moving ahead of her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward.

The name is believed to have been inspired by Queen Adelaide of England, who was married to King William IV, as well as Maria Adelaide of Portugal, a princess of the royal house of Braganza.

The royal couple’s connection to Portugal began in 2022, when Jack Brooksbank started working for property entrepreneur Mike Meldman, who is a business partner of George Clooney. Eugenie continued in her role as director of the art gallery Hauser & Wirth in London, balancing a life between the UK and Portugal.
