As part of the campaign, which runs until the 24th, the ANSR will conduct awareness-raising activities nationwide, while enforcement operations—focusing on risky behaviours linked to serious accidents, particularly the detection of alcohol-impaired driving—will be carried out by the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR).
In a statement, the authorities note that out of every 100 road accident victims autopsied in Portugal in 2025, 28 had blood alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.
“Of these, the majority (78%) showed a level equal to or higher than the threshold classified as a criminal offence,” the statement notes.
The authorities emphasise that “driving under the influence of alcohol continues to pose an unacceptable risk to all road users, impairing a driver’s reflexes, reaction time, and decision-making ability, even when small amounts are consumed.”
The PSP, ANSR, and GNR report that approximately 2.1 million alcohol tests were administered in 2025, with 1.6% returning positive results.
“Offences involving driving under the influence of alcohol account for about 2.4% of all road traffic violations recorded in the country,” according to the statement.
This is the eighth of 11 campaigns scheduled under the 2026 National Enforcement Plan (PNF), targeting one of the key risk factors in road accidents—alcohol.
