The locomotive-inspired artwork, created by Francisco José, a local entrepreneur specialising in design and graphic arts, aims not only to enhance the public realm through an artistic and cultural installation at one of the municipality’s main transport hubs, but also to strengthen the area’s identity and connection with its history.

“The work of a parish council must respond to the needs of the community and act as an intermediary between residents and the Municipal Council, but sometimes it is also about giving people a little something extra — something that makes local residents proud”, said Analídio Ponte, President of the São Sebastião Parish Council.

The installation also marks the 137th anniversary of the opening of the Algarve Railway Line and evokes the arrival of the first train in Loulé, which travelled from Barreiro on 1 July 1889 — a milestone that marked a turning point in the region’s development.

“It was a challenge, given the short time we had to complete it, but we did our best and managed to create something that really stands out. I hope citizens will help keep an eye on it, as vandalism is something we cannot completely control”, said the artist, Francisco José.

Loulé Mayor Telmo Pinto highlighted the importance of the railway's arrival and the central position it gave Loulé, which immediately transformed the municipality's economy and that of the wider region at the end of the 19th century. Among other things, the railway facilitated the transport of grain and flour destined for local mills and bakeries.

From its inception, however, the railway was also the subject of controversy, particularly because of the station’s distance from the town centre.

Despite the changes brought by time, the Mayor stressed that mobility remains one of the Algarve’s major challenges, noting that many parts of the region are still not served by public transport.

“We need trains, buses and other means of transport that complement one another and serve those who live, work in and visit this region throughout the year”, said Telmo Pinto.

The celebrations marking another anniversary of the São Sebastião parish concluded with a musical performance at Largo Afonso III. Musician Sandrino, a finalist in the 2026 Festival da Canção, joined the Artistas de Minerva Philharmonic Band on stage for a concert.
