The one-semester course must begin by autumn 2027 and will cover 13 money-management topics. Lessons will include banking, debt, credit scores, taxes, investing, insurance and budgeting. California became the 26th state to introduce such a requirement.

Some California school districts have already introduced financial literacy courses, with strong student interest reported. Fresno Unified has offered personal finance education since 2023, with classes becoming some of its most popular electives. Teachers have reported high engagement with lessons covering savings, budgets, retirement plans and credit scores. Nationwide, 30 states have agreed to guarantee personal finance courses for teenagers.
