RTP reports that the 34-year-old woman, who was 39 weeks pregnant, had just arrived in Lisbon on a flight from Santiago, Cabo Verde.

Emergency services were called to the airport, but the birth took place before the woman could be transferred to a maternity hospital.

The mother had been travelling with her six-year-old daughter. Following the birth, the child was placed in the care of her father, who was waiting at the airport for the family to arrive.

The mother and newborn baby were later transported to Maternidade Alfredo da Costa in Lisbon.

No further information about the baby or the circumstances surrounding the birth has been released.
