Buyers who once looked exclusively at Lisbon, Cascais or the Algarve are now weighing up the Douro Valley, Comporta and the wider Alentejo too.

Safety is a recurring theme. For families relocating internationally, it tends to sit near the top of the list, and Portugal performs well here. The country was ranked the 7th safest nation in the world in the 2025 Global Peace Index, a statistic that comes up again and again in buyer conversations.

For anyone weighing up a move with children, or simply wanting peace of mind day to day, that ranking carries real weight.

Then there's the climate, and the lifestyle that follows from it. Over 300 days of sunshine a year is the headline figure, but it's the long coastlines, the slower pace outside the main cities and the genuine outdoor culture running through the year that tend to seal the deal.

The economy has been quietly building confidence too. Portugal was named "Economy of the Year" by The Economist in 2025, on the back of low inflation, steady employment and strong stock market performance. It isn't usually the reason buyers start looking at Portugal, but it's increasingly the reason they feel comfortable following through.

"We're seeing buyers who might once have gone straight to the South of France or Italy now taking Portugal seriously as a long-term base, not just a holiday option," said Paul Stannard, chairman and founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club.

There's also the question of value. Compared with equivalent lifestyle destinations elsewhere in Western Europe or the US, Portugal continues to offer relative value, even as domestic prices climb. Luxury buyers aren't necessarily hunting for a bargain, but many are pleasantly surprised by what their budget stretches to here.

Talk to enough buyers and a pattern emerges. Nobody moves to Portugal for a single reason. It's safety, climate, quality of life and a sense that the country is going somewhere economically, and increasingly it's the combination of all four that's pulling in buyers who might once have looked elsewhere.

That combination is reshaping the luxury market itself, with developers responding through branded residences, resort-style living and new-builds finished to a standard that wasn't common a few years ago.
