Funchal invests €2.7 million in water and waste networks

The Funchal City Council approved the opening of an international tender to execute a project in the water and waste sector, budgeted at €2.7 million, said mayor Jorge Carvalho.

The project aims to launch drinking water supply and wastewater and rainwater drainage networks on Rua Dr. António Sales Caldeira and in the Bairro das Virtudes, in the parish of São Martinho, one of the 10 that make up the municipality of Funchal.

Jorge Carvalho stressed that the measure was unanimously approved at the weekly meeting of the executive, composed of six elected members of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition and five opposition members without portfolios: two from JPP, one from PS, one from Chega, and one independent (former Chega).

Also unanimously, the council approved several social support measures for residents in areas such as health (for the purchase of medicines), transportation, education (for the purchase of textbooks and school supplies), rental, and birth and family, totalling more than €156,000.

The president of the local authority, by contrast, said the Local Housing Strategy, recently approved at a City Council meeting, foresees an investment of €40 million and the construction of 300 housing units by the end of the term, in 2029.
