Life evolves. Dreams do too.
For many people considering a home in the Algarve, the search may begin with familiar criteria — location, price, number of bedrooms, a pool or perhaps a sea view. But behind these practical considerations lies a more fundamental question: what kind of life should the property make possible?
Few places illustrate this better than Portimão and its surrounding areas. Within a relatively compact region, landscapes, atmosphere and the rhythm of daily life can change considerably. Praia da Rocha offers oceanfront living and urban energy; Alvor and Ferragudo combine the sea with the character of traditional fishing villages; the golf areas between Portimão and Carvoeiro provide greenery and privacy; Silves and Mexilhoeira Grande offer countryside and space; while Monchique brings an entirely different landscape and pace of life.
This diversity inspired Engel & Völkers Portimão to organise its latest Private Residences collection around five lifestyle aspirations: at the coast, at the golf, in the countryside, in the mountains and in the city.
We spoke with Wilfrid and Milka Hoos, license partners of Engel & Völkers Portimão, about these different ways of living and why understanding lifestyle can be just as important as choosing the property itself.
You describe the wider Portimão area as offering very different lifestyles within a relatively small region. What makes it so diverse?
Wilfrid: I think that is one of the great advantages of our region. You can wake up overlooking the Atlantic, live beside a golf course, have a large plot surrounded by countryside, look towards the coast from the Monchique mountains, or live in Portimão with restaurants, shops and services around the corner.
And these places are often only a relatively short drive apart. The atmosphere can change completely within just a few kilometres.
When we talk to clients, we therefore try to go beyond the normal property criteria. Budget, size and property type matter, of course, but we also want to understand how someone imagines their daily life here.
Milka: A home is also an emotional decision. People often describe individual features when they first come to us, but behind those wishes there is usually a picture of how they see themselves living. Understanding that picture is very important.
As we say in our Private Residences brochure, “The true value of a property extends beyond its location — it is defined by the lifestyle it offers and the possibilities it holds.”
For many international buyers, the Algarve dream still begins with the sea. What are the different options along the coast?
Wilfrid: Even “living by the sea” can mean very different things.
Praia da Rocha offers the classic oceanfront experience: dramatic cliffs, a magnificent beach, apartments with Atlantic views and a lively promenade.
Alvor and Ferragudo are different. Both retain the character of traditional fishing villages, with their estuaries, beaches and a more intimate atmosphere. Then, particularly between Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, we see another type of coastal living: contemporary luxury villas, often on elevated plots with panoramic sea views, pools and generous outdoor spaces.
Milka: What they have in common is that the Atlantic becomes part of everyday life. Walking by the sea, having coffee overlooking the water or simply enjoying the ocean breeze are no longer holiday activities. They become part of your normal routine.
Golf is another lifestyle closely associated with the Algarve. Is living by the golf courses mainly for golfers?
Wilfrid: Not necessarily. Golfers obviously appreciate having courses such as Penina, Alto Golf, Gramacho and Vale da Pinta virtually on their doorstep, but the attraction goes well beyond golf.
People value the green surroundings, open views, low-density development and privacy and, in many cases, the security and services offered by established resorts.
Milka: You don't need to play golf to appreciate waking up to green surroundings or sitting on your terrace overlooking a fairway. There is a calmness to these areas that appeals to many people.
And because of the Algarve climate, it is a lifestyle that can be enjoyed throughout much of the year.
You are also seeing interest in countryside locations such as Silves and Mexilhoeira Grande. What is attracting buyers inland?
Wilfrid: I would describe the attraction as space without isolation.
You can have a generous plot, gardens, perhaps an orchard or a pool, and a strong connection with nature while still being relatively close to beaches, towns, services and main roads.
Space and privacy have become increasingly important to buyers in recent years. We have seen greater interest in larger homes, gardens and quieter surroundings.
Milka: There is also an authenticity that people appreciate — traditional houses, local markets, regional produce and a more relaxed rhythm.
For some clients, countryside living simply means having more room to breathe. It doesn't necessarily mean withdrawing from everything. That balance is precisely what makes these areas attractive.
Monchique is quite different again. Who is attracted to living in the mountains?
Milka: Monchique has a very special atmosphere. As you travel into the mountains, everything changes. It becomes greener and cooler, with forests, natural springs and wonderful views.
It appeals particularly to people who consciously want tranquillity, nature and a different pace of life.
Wilfrid: Properties often have substantial plots, and some enjoy panoramic views across the Algarve towards the Atlantic. You also find historic houses, restored properties and places with potential for projects connected with nature, wellbeing or small-scale tourism.
And Monchique is not as isolated as people unfamiliar with the area sometimes imagine. You can genuinely feel that you have stepped away from the busier Algarve while still being within relatively easy reach of the coast.
And what about Portimão itself — and ultimately, how do you help a client decide which lifestyle is right for them?
Wilfrid: Portimão is sometimes underestimated as a place for permanent living. It is a real, functioning city throughout the year. Healthcare, shopping, restaurants, schools and everyday services are nearby, while the beach and waterfront remain part of your surroundings.
For people planning to spend most or all of the year here, that convenience can be very important.
Milka: Ultimately, though, there is no single “best” lifestyle. For one person, the dream is opening the doors in the morning and seeing the Atlantic. For another, it is living beside a golf course. Someone else wants land, nature and privacy, while another wants restaurants and services within walking distance.
That is why understanding the buyers’ motivation is so important.
Wilfrid: A beautiful property in the wrong environment is not necessarily the right home. So before asking which property a client wants to buy, we increasingly start with another question: How do you want to live?
