The Airbus A330 was travelling from Barcelona to Boston when it was diverted to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.

The alert was raised at around 5:30pm, and emergency services were called to the airport ahead of the aircraft's arrival. The plane landed safely shortly before 6pm.

Fourteen people received medical assistance following the landing, mainly due to smoke inhalation. Four passengers were taken to São João Hospital in Porto with minor injuries.

More than 60 emergency personnel were called to the airport, with around 22 vehicles involved in the response.

Flights at Porto Airport were temporarily suspended while the emergency was being dealt with, but operations later resumed.

RTP reported that there was no fire onboard the aircraft. The cause of the smoke has not yet been confirmed.

The airport emergency alert ended at around 7:30pm, although ambulances and medical teams remained at the scene for some time afterwards.

Delta said the flight had been diverted to Porto following a reported mechanical issue and confirmed that the aircraft landed safely.
