The hotel, which sits above the cliffs at Praia das Gaivotas, is among five Algarve hotels awarded one Michelin Key in the 2026 selection.
The recognition places Vilalara among the Portuguese hotels selected by Michelin inspectors for the quality of their overall hospitality experience. The Michelin Guide considers factors including architecture and design, service, connection to the destination, value and the individual character of a hotel when awarding its Keys.
Exceptional experiences
One Michelin Key is given to hotels offering what the guide describes as a "very special stay", while two and three Keys recognise increasingly exceptional hotel experiences.
As reported by Postal, the award comes during a particularly significant year for Vilalara, which is celebrating six decades in the Algarve.
The hotel dates back to 1966 and is marking its 60th anniversary throughout 2026 with a programme focused on gastronomy, wellness, culture and its heritage.
Located in Porches, between Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro, the property stretches across around 11 hectares of gardens overlooking the Atlantic and has direct access to Praia das Gaivotas.
Vilalara was also one of the early names associated with thalassotherapy in Portugal, using seawater and the marine environment as part of its approach to wellness.
The Michelin Guide also highlighted its long history, noting that the resort has welcomed members of the aristocracy, artists, and international jet-set guests over the decades.
Anniversary celebrations
The Michelin Key is not the only recognition Vilalara received this year.
In March, Coral – Éden do Mar, headed by chef Diogo Pereira, joined the Michelin Guide Portugal's selection of recommended restaurants.
Ana Marques, People & Culture Director at Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve, said the latest recognition reflects not only the work of the current team but also the many people who have been part of the hotel during its 60-year history.
The anniversary celebrations are continuing into October. From 5 to 7 October, former world number one tennis player Martina Hingis will visit Vilalara for a series of private tennis sessions and a meet-and-greet as part of the hotel's anniversary programme.
The first Michelin Key therefore adds another milestone to a year already dedicated to looking back at six decades of the hotel's history on the Algarve coast.
