In a statement, the Itinerant Commercial Railway Inspection Union (SFRCI) said it had suspended its strike notice for 30 October after “positive developments were recorded in the process of resolving the labour dispute between workers and CP” during a meeting with government representatives on 27 October.
The SFRCI said suspending the strike showed responsibility and confidence in dialogue, following the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing and CP management’s willingness to address workers' demands.
During the meeting on 27 October, participants reviewed the union's list of demands. Ministerial representatives, together with CP management, “expressed their willingness to follow up on the demands put forward by the SFRCI”.
“This decision demonstrates institutional responsibility and openness to dialogue, showing that the SFRCI prioritises negotiations and the search for concrete solutions whenever there is a genuine willingness to address workers' concerns,” the union added.
However, the union stressed that this openness must “translate into concrete measures, clear commitments and tangible results”.
Despite suspending the strike notice, the SFRCI emphasised that this did not mean abandoning its demands or giving “carte blanche to the ministry or CP management”. Instead, it represented “an opportunity for dialogue” to deliver the results workers expect.
If this does not happen, the SFRCI said it reserves the right to “resume trade union action and resort to whatever forms of action it considers necessary, including calling further strikes or other industrial action, in accordance with the applicable law”.
