Greece has just finalised the first stage of an ambitious expansion to the Eastern Mediterranean’s power grid, connecting the island of Crete to the mainland through an undersea power cable.

This seeks to link the island, which is currently dependent on fossil fuels for power generation, to the abundant renewable energy of mainland Europe’s grid.
The power cable, called the Great Sea Interconnector, is 330 kilometres long and costs €1 billion to build.
