It was at a recent executive meeting that Oeiras City Council approved the acquisition of two lots on the Cabanas Golf site in Barcarena, totalling 43 hectares, according to a statement published on its official website. The idea is to reactivate the golf course that has been inactive for about a year.

The aim of the Oeiras City Council is to “build the country’s first municipal golf course there,” they explain. The city council also wants to “create opportunities for fans of this sport to develop their practice and also invest in training, since it will be available to schools, universities, clubs, all young people and the community in general”, they add in the document.

The purchase of these two lots from Cabanas Golf will cost the city council 675 thousand euros, according to a source from the city council who spoke to Público. However, it is not yet known how much will be associated with the rehabilitation of the space and its maintenance. The ownership of the land will be “exclusively municipal”, but the management of the golf course may be granted to other entities.

The idea is for the Municipal Golf Academy in Barcarena to start operating at the end of August 2025.

In addition to investing in the practice of golf, the city council of Oeiras will also expand the green area, since it intends for this land to also be “a leisure space that can be enjoyed by the entire population”.
