The Lisbon logo is as iconic as it gets, and its history goes back further than you may think.
In 1173, King Afonso I ordered that the remains of Saint Vincente be returned. The saint was supposedly buried at the most southwestern tip of Portugal, Cabo Vincente. Yet the King wanted his remains to be in the newly reconquered city of Lisbon.
On the Journey, two ravens sat at both ends of the ship, safeguarding his relics, an act so iconic that live ravens were kept in the cathedral of Lisbon for more than 800 years. A tradition that stopped in the 1970’s due to concern for their well-being.
This Sea Voyage didn’t just create the city's logo, but also made Saint Vincent a protector of Sailors and Navigators.
