According to the PSP, from 1 January to 31 March 2026, 4,313,811 people were checked at 11 airports and airfields on the mainland and in the Azores and Madeira. Of these, 2,202,520 entered Portugal, and 2,111,291 left.
PSP intercepted 9,302 arriving passengers from outside the Schengen Area to check entry compliance, 45.3% more than in early 2025.
In early 2026, police refused entry to 704 foreign citizens (+57.5%), issued 73 entry bans (+217.4%), and made 157 arrests (+36.5%).
During this period, PSP detected 188 document fraud cases (+1.1%) and applied 5,484 precautionary measures (+153%).
In October 2023, PSP took over airport border control duties from the now-defunct Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), under the National Foreigners and Borders Unit.
In 2025, PSP checked 21,105,180 air border passengers, an increase of 882,711 over 2024, or 4.4%, according to a January report.
