Saldanha is one of the key metro stations in Lisbon. It sits in Praça Duque de Saldanha and works as a link between the Yellow and Red lines, which also gives it a unique blend of 2 different art styles.
The station is one of the original Lisbon Metro stations and first opened in 1959. The Yellow Line part was designed by Falcão e Cunha, with decorative work by Maria Keil. The Red Line extension opened in 2009 with architecture by Germano Venade and plastic art by José de Almada Negreiros.
The art is simple but effective. Maria Keil’s tiles give rhythm and brightness to the walls, while the newer Red Line side adds a more modern visual language and honors Almada Negreiros, an important Portuguese figure.
Saldanha shows how Lisbon turns a transport station into a space with history, art, and movement. What other metro stations have you visited in Lisbon?
