The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) works with artists, schools and communities, using creativity as a tool for expression, connection and confidence building.
Across Portugal, SAF currently runs programmes and initiatives in Lisbon, Estremoz and the Algarve, bringing together artists, young people and local communities through exhibitions, workshops and creative projects. Through these programmes, the Foundation hopes to create welcoming spaces where people can engage with creativity, connect with others and explore artistic expression.
Alongside its art prizes and exhibitions, the Foundation supports expressive arts programmes led by certified art therapists, creating safe and supportive environments where children can explore emotions, build confidence and develop new ways to communicate through creativity. Through drawing, painting and collaborative making, participants are encouraged to express themselves in ways that can often feel easier than words alone.

These sessions are not traditional art classes, but carefully structured expressive arts programmes designed to support emotional wellbeing, self-expression and confidence through creative practice. By working with certified art therapists, the Foundation is able to provide spaces where participants feel supported, listened to and encouraged to communicate through visual and creative processes.

The programmes currently support children and young people from a range of backgrounds and communities, including those who may be experiencing social isolation, emotional challenges or barriers to communication. SAF believes creativity can play an important role in helping individuals feel seen, valued and connected, while offering new ways to communicate, reflect and engage with others.

In addition to these programmes, SAF also delivers free monthly artist-led workshops that are open to the wider community. These sessions invite children and families to engage directly with artists and creative practices in an accessible and welcoming environment.
The workshops are developed in collaboration with local artists, and SAF welcomes opportunities to work with creative practitioners from across the community. By connecting artists directly with participants, the Foundation helps create hands-on experiences that encourage creativity, exchange and connection through shared artistic experiences.

SAF’s work in Portugal continues to grow through partnerships with schools, artists and cultural organisations, helping support artistic talent and community engagement across the country. By combining exhibitions, prizes, workshops and expressive arts programmes, the Foundation aims to create opportunities for people to experience art not only as something to observe, but also as something to participate in and benefit from directly.
This month also marks the beginning of the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Student Art Prize campaign, celebrating artwork created by students from across the country. Over the coming months, shortlisted artworks, exhibitions and public voting will be shared as part of the Foundation’s wider programme in Portugal. Selected works will also be available for sale, with proceeds helping support both young artists and SAF’s ongoing community initiatives.
Later this year, the Foundation will also launch the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize, showcasing contemporary artists working across Portugal while helping support SAF’s ongoing community programmes and expressive arts initiatives. Through both prizes, SAF hopes to create greater visibility for artists in Portugal while continuing to build connections between creativity, community and social impact.
